Program Description

SPEC’s Links Newcomer Family Liason Workers work with families and children to help integrate them into the community on a one-to-one or group setting, while providing supports and resources through offering advocacy, emotional support and opportunities to practice English for immigrants and refugees.
SPEC’s SWIS worker work with immigrants and refugees in a school setting to help children transition and adapt to a new school. Needs assessments are offered to identify gaps in services to help better support students within the school setting.
SPEC’s HIPPY workers work with immigrant and refugee parents who may be vulnerable or isolated, to empower them as their children’s first educator. This program is aimed at helping parents prepare their children for success in school life.
SPEC’s Community services provide clients 18+ who are needing supports unrelated to parenting and family issues, who may be facing barriers such as, health or mental health challenges, unemployment, lack of housing, language barriers, education levels, literacy, financial issues, and/or addictions. The programs endeavor is to build on existing strengths and increase personal resiliency to deal with life’s challenges.
Makerspace provides a safe space where for youth aged 11 to 18 to learn by doing. Makerspace offers a variety of learning opportunities, programs, and workshops while developing meaningful relationships which will assist them in dealing with life's challenges. MakerSpace combines STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) skill building with social and emotional skill building that will help build a foundation for success in the future.
The SPEC Hub is part of the Family Resource Network (FRN) providing information, referral and service navigation for families who have children 0 – 18yrs. The program and services will support child safety and wellbeing, child and youth development, and strengthen parent and caregiver knowledge.
