Mentor Orientation
Supporting volunteers to effectively mentor young people begins with initial and on-going training. To support organizations in providing quality, standardized training, AMP has developed an online orientation program for mentors. It is most beneficial if mentors participate in these pieces of training before they are matched. Additional in-person and/or program-specific training may be required. This training provides a foundation of knowledge that you can build upon.
Mentor Training
- Orientation for mentors, both teens and adults.
- Students have individual accounts. Multiple accounts can be set up by the teacher.
- No cost.
- A five-module training
- Introduction and overview of mentoring
- The importance of mentoring
- Building a positive mentoring relationship
- About an hour long - can start and stop. Progress can be saved and completed at a later time.
- Certificate is available upon completion.
- Meant as an orientation to be supplemented with ongoing training.
- Teachers with an admin account can review and confirm completion.
- Can be used with CTS Course - HSS 1050 (Introduction to Mentorship)
Mentee Training
- Orientation for mentees (ages 8-12), but can be used by older ages.
- No individual account sign-up required.
- No cost.
- Designed to help participants understand what it means to be a mentee, how to get the most out of time spent with their mentor, and develop relationship skills they can use for years to come.
- There are two recommended ways for mentees to complete this training:
- It is most effective when delivered to a small group with an adult facilitator. Ideally, each child would follow along on their own device or have their own downloaded copy of the placemat.
- Another option is for an adult to work with one child, allowing for discussion of concepts. The child could use a device or have a paper copy of the placemat.
- Facilitator guide available.
- Approx. 45 minutes to one-hour session – designed to be completed in one session.
- Certificate available upon completion.
- Can be used for CTS Course - HSS3050 (Becoming a Mentee).
