Through their preliminary participation in evaluation trainings organized by the Evaluation Capacity Network (ECN), AMP was able to recognize their need for further and more targeted support in fostering and developing the individual and organizational evaluation capacities within AMP and Alberta’s mentoring sector. To address these evaluation needs, the ECN developed a webinar series called Pre-Eval, aimed at being an educational tool for all staff in AMP, their partnership, and in the social-serving sector abroad. Evaluation has played a crucial role in supporting AMP’s growth and efforts in uplifting the mentoring profile in Alberta since its inception. In 2014, after completing their second organization-wide evaluation, AMP recognized the benefits of evaluation and saw the potential insights evaluation could provide to their partnership. As a result, AMP staff started to encourage and invite their partners to also learn about and engage in evaluation.

The biggest takeaway organizations gain from planning and engaging in an evaluation is its usefulness. Designed to a specific context, program or policy, evaluations provide organizations with the opportunity to uncover the nuances of their functioning, providing them with evidence that informs how to improve their actions to meaningfully impact those they serve.
