About

Sihle-Sizwe Vineyard Foundation was founded in 2016. We have a program that mentors first and second generation youth of African descent in Edmonton. Immigrant youth face conflicting identities . There is still a great need to support first and second generation immigrant families. The parents usually want to cling on to their own cultures. Where as the children are mixed between two cultures . That ends up creating different social problems within families. Statistics says that second generation immigrant youth are more prone to substance abuse, depression and mental problems. They are confused about who they are and where they fit. Our programs are created to bridge the gap, have open dialogue, prevent isolation, and get involvement. Our organisation is all encompassing serving youth from African countries ages 13 to 24.

Region

Edmonton & Area.

Program Description

(1)Our organisation has three activities (Mentor-ship and Counseling. We look for mentors who play their mentor-ship role without judgement

(2) Music & Dance. This activity brings the families together through music and dance. This activity mainly targets youth though we have special activities involving youth and their parents. Dance brings the creative side of youth as well as keep them active and eliminate boredom and isolation.

Open Dialogue is a discussions activity on various issues and challenges impacting on family relationships ( mom vs dad and parents vs children/youth). This activity target both parents and youth/children. We discuss family issues and each time we have different topics including a) Family structure within the enter cultural context (Both Canadian and ethano-culture), b) family relationships and communication, c) domestic violence.
