Program Description

The program the HERO Project provides is an in-school mentoring program for elementary students, using a volunteer base. Mentors are matched with students who could benefit from having a caring adult role model they could meet with, in school on a regular basis. Students are referred by schools or by parent/guardian request. Mentors meet with students in school, during school hours, talking, playing games and building a positive, up building relationship. Mentoring are not professional cousellors and are not about "fixing" a student, but rather coming alongside a student, supporting and encouraging. Mentors are volunteers who agree that its important for students to have positive inter-generational relationships that help build a students self worth.
