About

Creating Positive Change | We are a community-oriented youth organization founded in 2013 at the University of Alberta that uses art to empower youth to take on issues and causes in their local and global communities. All youngsters have the potential to create positive change as “youngstars”. Too often art and youth are deemed to be powerless in creating practical impact in our communities so we challenge ourselves to prove otherwise. We operate in the Edmonton area and try to use use art to provide value-based mentorship to children in local neighbourhoods.

Program Description

Our main mentorship program is the After-school Art Program (AAP). Launched at Brightview Elementary School in 2014, AAP provides value-based art enrichment to children at various elementary schools in Edmonton. In our communities, not all children have access to extracurricular opportunities due to varying circumstances. However, involvement in extracurricular activities can help children grow academically and socially1. As a community-orientated youth organization, we wanted to create a mentorship model that shares positive values by connecting postsecondary students, as role model figures, to children in local neighbourhoods. By bridging these two age-groups with each other, we hope to help them realize their potential.
