Program Description
The Burns Memorial Fund for Children has several granting programs that provide direct financial support to youth, and to families with children living in low-income situations.
These include:
High School Bursary Program - This program is for Calgary high school students who are within two semesters of graduating from grade 12 and require financial assistance. A basic living allowance is provided to assist students in covering expenses such as rent, food, and transportation, so they can focus on school and graduate.
Families Moving Forward - Working with nine partnering community agencies, this program provides grants to low-income families over three years to meet their children’s health, education, and recreation needs.
Senator Patrick Burns Legacy Scholarships - Post-secondary scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students who can demonstrate academic success as well as family financial need.
Oral Health – This program provides funding to cover urgent dental treatment costs for children and youth living in low-income situations.
Open Door Bursary – Financial support is provided to young adults living in low-income situations to help with specific costs related to their transition into further education, training, or employment. This program is offered in partnership with the United Way of Calgary and Area.
Watson Family Special Needs Grants - Grants are available to improve and sustain the quality of life for special needs children in low-income families by providing funds for services and equipment. This program is funded by the Watson Family Foundation, through the Calgary Foundation.
In addition to these granting programs, the Burns Memorial Fund for Children provides small, one-time grants to community agencies working with low-income children and youth through our Community Grants program.
We also work in partnership with other organizations to strategically disburse funds in the community through the Collaborative Funders’ Table, which is focused on improving employment outcomes for youth facing barriers.
We co-chair the Natural Supports Leadership Table and manage the Connections First website on behalf of the collaborative.
