My Role As A Mentor

I have been a mentor for 18 months. My mentee is 12 years old. We do everything and anything together: swim, shop, paint our nails, volunteer with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, bake, go for ice cream, really anything! My mentee and I are friends first so we always make sure we have fun no matter what we do.

What Motivated Me To Get Involved

Volunteering is very important to me and it was important to get self enrichment out of my volunteer time. The thought of mentorship and partnering with a child to build a trusting relationship was very exciting for me. I thought I was not old enough to mentor, feeling that you had to have a lot of life lessons in order to be successful; however, as I learned about the program, I thought it would be great to share my stories with someone else.

What I Enjoy Most About Being A Mentor

I enjoy the feeling of having an impact on someone’s life without it feeling like a lecture. I love that I can share my time with a young person who I truly care about and hope to have an impact on her life.

“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”
