AMP News – Youth Leadership Forum application deadline approaching

Youth Leadership Forum

Banff Centre November 5-7, 2013

Presented by

GOV Alberta

The Youth Leadership Forum will take place alongside the National Mentoring Symposium at the Banff Centre from November 5-7, 2013. We are quickly approaching the application deadline of September 27, 2013. We encourage you to share this exciting opportunity with the youth you work with. Youth aged 15 – 22 from across Alberta with a particular interest in community engagement and mentoring are encouraged to apply. 25 youth will be selected to attend with all costs associated with travel and conference attendance covered by grants from our generous sponsor.

Youth will have an opportunity to attend Keynote Sessions with speakers including Tom Jackson, Michael Unger and Max Valiqutette as well as presenting their perspective on the future of mentoring to the symposium attendees. In addition, youth will participate in a reception hosted by The Honorable Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta!

The forum will be designed to have a twofold benefit for youth;
  1. Garner feedback from youth attendees about what mentoring should look like for the next 100 years
  2. Increasing the knowledge base of youth with respect to mentoring and developing leadership and communication skills

Please note: Applications are due September 27, 2013. Confirmations will be sent to successful application on October 4, 2013.

TED Talk by Dave Eggers

My Wish: Once upon A SchoolAuthor Dave Eggers enthusiastically speaks about how the 826 Valencia tutoring and writing centre in San Francisco began and inspired similar centres around the world to open. At the end of the talk, he challenges us all to engage with the children in our communities:“You can use the skills that you have. The schools need you; the teachers need you; students and parents need you. They need your actual person, your physical personhood, and your open minds and open ears, and boundless compassion –  sitting next to them, listening and nodding, and asking questions for hours at a time. Some of the kids just plain don’t know how good they are – how smart, and how much they have to say. You can tell them! You can shine that light on them, one human interaction at a time.”
