The Alberta Mentoring Partnership Presents at Camp fYrefly
AMP Key Contacts Dayna Hobbs and Ellyse Lambie had the privilege of presenting a workshop at Camp fYrefly at both the Calgary and Edmonton locations on July 11 and July 25, respectively. The workshop, entitled, “Youth Mentorship: Unleashing Your Inner Superhero,” allowed participants to explore the positive impact that mentorship has on individuals and communities. Participants explored their inner strengths and, based on these strengths, created their own superhero persona. They learned about the importance and value of mentoring, practiced their communication and mentorship skills, and in a ‘call to action,’ reflected on how to use their strengths to mentor others.
Camp fYrefly, now in its 9th year, is an educational, social, and personal learning retreat for sexual and gender minority (LGBTTIQ) and allied youth of ages 14 to 24. It focuses on building and nurturing their leadership potential and personal resiliency in an effort to help them learn how to make significant contributions to their own lives and to their schools, home/group-home environments, and communities.
Highlights of actions identified by the youth during the ‘call to action’ included:

- I am going to try and be a mentor to the kid I babysit.
- Taking back all this information to my student council.
- I’m going to use my info to advise and assist several different friends.
- I’m going to support and change someone’s life.
- I’m going to apply this in everything I do in life. I’m going to take advantage of every opportunity to help.
- I will be more purposeful with my interactions with fellow campers.
- I am going to send my application/resume to Calgary Outlink to do phone support and help with the resource room!!
- I’m going to get people more involved in mentorship.
- Call BBBS!
- I’m going to pass this information to my church & school.
- Keep doing what I’m doing, but better and more often!
Retirement Announcement
On April 30, 2014, Sharon Moore, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary & Area, will retire. Sharon has dedicated 20 years of service to the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring movement. On behalf of the Board of Directors, the BBBS agency, and the thousands of children, youth and volunteer mentors who have participated in programs under Sharon’s tenure, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Sharon for her wonderful leadership and tireless efforts in support of the greater Calgary community. In addition, we all wish Sharon a long, healthy and happy retirement. She certainly has earned it.

- Apply for a bursary to attend the Symposium. Provided through a generous grant from the Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta, The Alberta Mentoring Partnership has a limited number of bursaries to allow staff/key volunteers to attend this event. - Encourage youth, ages 15-22, to attend the Youth Leadership Forum. Youth from across Alberta with a particular interest in community engagement and mentoring are encouraged to apply. 25 youth will be selected to attend with all costs associated with travel and conference attendance covered by grants from our generous sponsor.
